The producer and composer Lee "Scratch" Perry, 71 years old, a living legend of Jamaican music, is known for his difficult temperament - and, of course, for his genius, hence his comparison with the late Brazilian artist. And it will soon be seen in action here, due to the Pernambuco festival Abril Pro Rock. Completing 15 years, the event will extend the shows to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Lee Perry plays on April 14th at Circo Voador, with Digitaldubs, a group of producers and DJs opening. "He's one of the most important guys in the genre.
Lee Perry is the 'big bang', it pushed things forward", explains Nelson Meirelles, from Digitaldubs, bassist of the first formation of Rappa and producer of Cidade Negra's first album. Brazilians' expectations are high. In 2002, for example, he had three dates scheduled at Brasil (two in São Paulo and one in Amazonas) and decided not to come at the last minute. "When they gave him the plane ticket, he didn't like the number that came", recalls Nelson "I hope he likes it now", he jokes.
In a fit of madness, Perry once set fire to his studio. "I read a producer the other day saying that when someone different is around, he throws an attack, then relaxes. At least until another new person appears", says Meirelles. The degree of insanity, however, is comparable to genius. He produced some of the first tracks for Bob Marley and Wailers, as well as pioneering the typical Jamaican base that would later be called "riddim".
