Here are some tips for those who appreciate growing dreadlocks, whether for ideological reasons or simply for the striking look that the "braids" give people.
The appearance of the hair, as well as its shape, is already noticeable as dreadlocks on the first day after they are made, and they also reach maturity more quickly than with other methods;
You can control the size and shape of the dread, making it thinner, thicker, smoother or more twisted;
The method is completely natural;
Ideal for all hair types and lengths, and can be started when the hair is 3 inches long;
It is not actually a disadvantage; the method is one of the most time-consuming of all, taking up to 6 hours of work.
First of all, divide the hair into squares, approximately 2 inches each. This preparation serves to create a perfect unit across the entire scalp and form dreads evenly;
Temporarily, to hold these squares in place, use elastic bands or imported rubber bands;
After this step, with a wire brush the work should begin, pulling and combing each tuft of hair from each square, with as much force as possible backward;
Comb repeatedly and with as much force as you can manage. Naturally the hair will begin to twist at the root, due to the pressure and friction created. At this point it is not yet necessary to manually twist the hair;
Follow the previous instructions very slowly (so as not to hurt the person making the dreads — in this case YOU), all the way to the ends;
It is important to remember that the more pressure and force applied, the better the dreads will be made;
When you have fully worked the chosen area, secure the ends with an elastic band. Leave the elastic previously placed at the base of the hair, which will help hold the dreads in place. They should only be removed when the dreads begin to mature;
You must repeat the process on all the hair squares you have made on your head, each with its own strand of hair;
After finishing this part of the process, it is time to apply wax to the hair. It should be applied evenly on each dread created and along its entire length. Apply the wax in circular motions, which will help it penetrate between the hair strands, ensuring greater unification of the dreads;
Do not use oily waxes derived from petroleum. The recommended wax is natural, without additives or products harmful to the scalp, which would result in residue buildup and eventually damage the dreads;
Done, the process is finished. What matters now is maintenance until the dreads mature, which takes 3 to 4 months;
On the way to maturity the hair continues to take shape, forming the dreads and becoming more twisted, but for this it is important to observe certain rules. Right after the process is completed, it is necessary to go 3 to 5 days without washing the hair, since the wax applied will still be drying. After this period use only neutral, glycerin or baby soap, so as not to undo the dreads. Also use wax during this initial phase, to continue holding the hair in place. Following this procedure correctly is what will guarantee a perfect final result;
When applying maintenance wax, do not forget to always do so in circular motions and twisting the area near the root thoroughly. Rub as quickly as possible, in order to create friction and wear down the hair at the root, thus making it hold very tightly;
Following these steps, your dreads are sure to turn out right!
Important: Before starting the process, make sure your hair is completely dry and free of soap or shampoo residue. It is advisable to start using neutral, glycerin or baby soap one week before the initial dread-making session. These precautions are useful so as not to leave the hair oily, slippery and hindering the perfect twisting of the dreads.
