Born on October 21st 1960 in Kingston, Welton Irie is a deejay who is part of the Sound System culture. For those who don't know, it's a party phenomenon comparable to the funk dances in Rio De Janeiro, which exploded in the 70s at Jamaica, where several vocalists arrive to sing or improvise on strong instrumental bases, driven by a wall of speakers.
Famous for his ability to liven up dances, Welton Irie began his career in 1976, and gained the stage name of the legendary Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, owner of the Studio One label during his first recording. In 1978, he achieved great popularity on the island and inaugurated his discography, as a duo with Lone Ranger, another seminal name in this scene. Despite being powerful, the partnership lasted a short time, and at the beginning of the 80s, Welton Irie was already a solo artist, performing at the front of several sound systems and recording hits such as Army Life, which sold 30.000 copies in two months, when it was released on 1982.
In addition, he made recordings alongside other big names in Jamaican music, such as vocalist Sylford Walker and the recently deceased producer Joe Gibbs. But, for those less specialized in the subject, perhaps the strongest name on his list of partners is the dub master King Tubby, who produces several tracks and albums by Welton Irie. On August 29th, Friday, Welton Irie will sing for the first time in Brazil alongside Sound System from São Paulo, Dubversão.
