Deeder Zaman, former vocalist of Asian Dub Foundation, will perform twice this month in São Paulo: on February 21 in Carapicuíba and on February 26 at Livraria da Esquina in Barra Funda. The performances are the result of the musician's partnerships with the multicultural activist movement Indigenous Resistance (IR), which addresses themes of indigenous resistance and reality around the world, and with Dubdem Sound System, which has been conquering São Paulo's music scene with its selection of traditional Jamaican rhythms such as Nyahbinghi and a danceable mix of rub a dub, toaster, dancehall and modern roots reggae.
At both performances, the theme is to remember the Pataxó indigenous leader Galdino Jesus dos Santos, brutally murdered in Brasília on April 21, 1997. Leader of the Pataxó Hã-Hã-Hãe people, Galdino, who would participate in demonstrations on the Planalto for the recovery of the Caramuru-Paraguaçu indigenous land, was sleeping at a city bus stop when he was burned alive by five teenagers. One of the cruellest episodes in the history of Brazil's indigenous peoples, Galdino's death became a symbol of Indigenous Resistance's fight for indigenous causes in Brazil and other countries.
Together, IR and Dubdem Sound System have already carried out more than twenty projects uniting their partners around the world, using various artistic expressions and cultural interventions for the human rights of indigenous peoples. Among these projects, the first vinyl IR1, the IR11 single, Galdino posters spread around the world, graffiti and banners are some examples of this partnership work to keep the memory of the Pataxó leader alive.
The first performance, on February 21, takes place at Cohab 5 Malvina in Carapicuíba. It will be a free multicultural event to bring the public, especially young people, the theme of indigenous issues in large cities, through music and graffiti, with the participation of the graffiti group Labomb. On the sound system, the mix of Jamaican rhythms from Dubdem Sound System will merge with ragga, jungle, hip-hop and dub in Deeder Zaman's vocals. At this event, food will also be collected for the needy population of Carapicuíba.
On February 26, Deeder performs again with Dubdem Sound System at the bar Livraria da Esquina in Barra Funda. This time, the dance floor heats up with a selection of rub a dub, toaster and dancehall, plus modern and danceable riddims for Deeder Zaman to sing his messages. A reference in the region for the eclecticism of its musical programming, which includes hip-hop, rock, house and Brazilian music, Livraria da Esquina is also betting on dub and reggae to heat up its dance floors even more.
