The band Nayah, born from Rio de Janeiro, has just released its new single/video clip "A Vida Não Pode Ser Pela Metade" from the CD of the same name, which will be released soon. Check out the exclusive interview that Surforeggae did with JPunk (vocalist of the group), which tells a little more about the trajectory, future projects and of course the most recent work produced by Arthur Maia, famous bassist involved in the cream of Brazilian music, having shared the stage with names like Lulu Santos, Jorge Benjor, Ney Matogrosso, among others, and recorded with beasts like Roberto Carlos, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Seu Jorge, etc.
Arthur is also the nephew of the legendary and late bassist Luizão Maia, who was part of the golden age of Brazilian music.
What did a great musician like Arthur Maia (who produced the new CD that is coming out of the oven) bring to your work and what was the recording process like?
JPunk: Arthur brought all his genius and simplicity, he helped a lot at every stage of the process. Ever since we arrived at his studio for the first time, he has shown himself to be a very creative producer, open to suggestions and ideas, and who likes to be surprised. The recording process was very organic, we only had the basis of the songs in voice and guitar, nothing recorded yet. We created several things together, the band and Arthur, in the studio.
It was a very good exchange, the vibe really flowed! Because, when Arthur Maia calls, "nego" appears quickly! And we also had to adapt our recording sessions according to his schedule, which at the time was traveling a lot with the Gilberto Gil. Overall, it was a very rich process and a huge learning experience for us at Nayah.
In addition to a great producer, the new album also features some special appearances. Could you talk a little about each of them and their respective songs?
JPunk: Well, it features Mad Professor, legendary Dub and Reggae producer, one of the best in the world. Mad comes straight to Brazil, we became friends and even did a show together in Lapa. The Professor listened to our songs, liked them and gave us a CD with several of his riddims, some with bass and drums recorded by the monsters Sly e Robbie, from Black Uhuru!! We chose a base from Professor to use on this new album and wrote the lyrics "Não queremos guerra", modesty aside, it was a blast!
It's classic reggae of the best quality, with different timbres and the signature of the great master of Dub. With Da Lua (Marcelinho da Lua) we made "O vôo do abutre", a Brazilian dubstep with one foot in Jamaica and the other in England. Without leaving aside the Brazilian swing, of course. And we also had the honor of recording a song with the great violinist-composer-writer and poet Jorge Mautner. It's a very foreign song, it's called "A vida é o amor".
You yourself characterize the band as a mixture of rhythms, sounds and colors. What are the band's biggest influences and the styles that are most present?
JPunk: The Nayah isn't just about music. The Nayah is the result of the experience of each of us in this increasingly open and integrated world. We are influenced by all arts, including cinema, visual arts, poetry, theater. Even philosophy interests us. Musically, we have several references, such as Paralamas do Sucesso, Cidade Negra, Planet Hemp, Gabriel o Pensador, Black Alien, Bob Marley, O Rappa, Nação Zumbi, Jorge Ben, Beastie Boys, etc. Throw all this in the blender and the Nayah sonic vitamin is ready!!
How many members do the group have? Could you introduce each one?
JPunk: We are seven members. Kid Mumu (vocals, guitar and ukelele), me (JPunk, vocals), Renzo (vocals), Alex Gaspar (guitar), Caio Axiotis (bass), Felipe Ferreira (drums) and João Pompeo (keyboards).
What are your plans until the end of 2013 and for 2014?
JPunk: Firstly, the CD launch, which will be in the second half of the year. We are defining dates and locations for the Launch. We want to promote this CD all over Brazil, do a big tour taking our music to as many people as possible. Let's go on the road!! For 2014, the idea is to continue touring, make new videos and perhaps record another album. We are always composing, making songs.
