band Jah i Ras gets spotlight in the Folha de SP ao misturar reggae with ritual Daime! Watch!
In Itapecerica da Serra, São Paulo, a community gained prominence in Folha de São Paulo for combining the famous Santo Daime ritual with Rastafari culture. The ritual takes place every two weeks at the Céu de Santa Maria de Sião church, the first community in Brazil to link these two cultures. After facing rejection from other groups they participated in, the members of the band Jah i Ras decided to create their own community following their convictions. In Daime, people cut their hair. Rastafari culture recommends the opposite, in addition to restricting use to natural things. It is hard to explain that Daime tea does not contain alcohol and is natural" — says Ras Kadhu, vocalist of Jah i Ras.

The idea of founding the church arose after he drank the tea in 2003. I had just become a vegetarian, and I wanted to vomit everything bad that was left in my body. At the time, I met a Jamaican who recommended the tea to me." — explains Ras Kadhu. Kadhu says he was baptized in the Santo Daime religion by cartoonist Glauco, who was shot and killed in March 2010.

THE COMMUNITY

Currently 10 people live on the site, but Ras Bruno Muniz, the band's bassist who was responsible for purchasing the 10,000 m² plot of land, intends to build more housing. The Céu de Santa Maria de Sião church preaches Christianity, but is also open to people of other religions. Everyone brings their own experience, like Kardecists, Umbanda practitioners and even simple yoga practitioners. Here it is an eclectic religious center, and the tea has the power to heal everyone" — says Ras Kadhu.

Common among Rastas, the use of marijuana is not condemned among Daime followers. Members use the expression "saudar Santa Maria" to refer to the use of the herb. People who frequent the community report that the tea brings purification, lightness and peace of mind, and that receiving all the energy that ayahuasca (the tea) provides requires time, as one community member affirms. Life with Daime is good, but only after many years did I learn to know the spirituality of the drink. Time is needed to create a symbiosis with the body and receive the energy in full.". In Brazil, the ritual use of ayahuasca is permitted for religious ceremonies. Ayahuasca is a Quechua word (South American indigenous language), meaning spirit (aya) and vine (waska/huasca), something like "vine of the spirit".
