Farewell to Chico Evangelista, one of Brazil's reggae pioneers! Learn more.
One of the pioneers of reggae in Brazil passed away on Tuesday, February 21st. Chico Evangelista became known for having recorded one of the first reggae tracks in the country, "Rasta Pé", back in the 1970s. The album "Bahia Jamaica" by Chico and Jorge Alfredo, released in 1980, paved the way for the consolidation of Jamaican music in Brazilian territory. Chico suffered from diabetes and was recently admitted to the ICU of Hospital Roberto Santos in Salvador in a coma, where he did not recover.
