Even with all the prejudice, disrespect and indifference of the system, Reggae – spiritual and awareness music remains firm and strong in Salvador. The Surforeggae team went to take a closer look at the independent trio that came out on the Avenida circuit in Salvador, with singer Geraldo Cristal and band Família Real.
The times given to Reggae in Carnaval de Salvador are always the latest and the rhythm groups start their presentations at 3 or 4 am to end at 7 am, a time when the vast majority of the media are keeping their eyes closed to what is happening.
Geraldo Cristal showed on February 17th that Reggae is resistance, and with intelligent and awareness-raising lyrics we can educate people and free them from the mental slavery to which they are subjected all the time, especially during Carnival where the dissemination of futility and the approach of totally empty themes that add up to nothing prevails. Songs like “Carta ao Presidente”, “Regga’e’ssência” and “Vaidade” represent exactly the message this song carries and for those who want to understand, well, those who don't, amen.
