Now it's São Paulo's turn! Gregory Isaacs stages a true spectacle at Kva! Check it out.
Last Thursday in São Paulo was extremely special. The living legend of world reggae, Gregory Isaacs, performed at \r\nKVA as part of his Brazil tour. As at the "República do Reggae", an event covered by Surforeggae live from Salvador - BA, the king of "Lovers Rock" has Leões de Israel as his backing band. This São Paulo band has been impressing roots reggae audiences for some time with its strong and original approach, standing on equal footing with Lloyd Parks & We The People Band, the group that normally accompanies the Jamaican star.\r\n\r\nScheduled start at 11:30 PM, and Expressão Regueira takes the stage to warm up a KVA that, so far, had a modest crowd. With approximately one hour of performance, the stage closes for the DJ set by Dj Marcello Tux. The warm-up could not have been better. Plenty of rockers and roots sounds, fitting for the occasion, since the king of Lovers Rock has gone through all styles. There was even a nod to contemporary roots reggae, drawing attention to bands from St. Croix. \r\n\r\nThanks to labels like I Grade and Mt. Nebo Records, roots reggae is more alive than ever and has been making a lot of noise around the world. Tux played major local names like Bambu Station, Iba, Abja, Star Lion Family, Batch, Dezarie, Yahadanai, Mada Nile, etc., living up to his catchphrase: "Helmets on your heads!". After the "Arquivo Tux" gems, the main act was announced, and the KVA, practically packed, was full of anticipation. \r\n\r\nEdu Satta Jah wakes up his bass and the house goes wild with a killer instrumental sequence! The brass section is better than ever, and the keyboard is handled by Márcio, member of Mystical Roots and Killaman & Roots Controllers. The cue is given, and "Number One" marks Gregory Isaacs's entrance. What an opening! \r\n\r\nThere was probably a special set list for Brazil, as many songs came from the album "Willow Tree", released in Brazil by Movie Play. There was no time to breathe! Tracks like "Mr. Brown", "Raggamuffin" and even "Slave Master", a more militant song featured in the classic film "Rockers", shook even the most indifferent soul in the venue. \r\n\r\nNow, without a doubt, the peak of the show was the classic "Night Nurse". No wonder — this 1982 album was an icon of Gregory's career, marking an important page in reggae history and immortalizing the star's image. It featured none other than the razor-sharp Roots Radics Band, which speaks for itself. The crowd went wild, and with uninterrupted choruses accompanied Gregory Isaacs until the end.\r\n

Gregory Isaacs \r\ncontinues his journey, but we still have Inner Circle next week. Stay tuned to the Surforeggae schedule.\r\n\r\n Click here to see photos from this event.\r\n\r\n
