Reggae Sunsplash 1983 — 6th edition in Montego Bay

The sixth edition of Reggae Sunsplash took place from June 28 to July 2, 1983, marking the festival's debut at the newly inaugurated Bob Marley Centre in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Five nights of continuous programming brought together around twenty-eight acts, including legends of roots, pioneers of dancehall, and invited international names.

The official opening was by the German group Supermax, invited by the Jamaica Tourist Board to showcase the festival's internationalization. Wednesday, June 29, was marked by the performance of Musical Youth, a British youth group at the peak of global fame with "Pass The Dutchie." The complete night-by-night lineup was never publicly consolidated — what was documented were the live recordings from this edition, which resulted in at least five LPs released in 1983 (Toots and The Maytals, The Gladiators, Israel Vibration, Eek-a-Mouse & Michigan & Smiley, and The Twinkle Brothers).
